그리스의 아름다운 섬 산티아고가 있습니다. 파란 지붕에 하얀 건물이 인상적이죠. 이번 한국선교 140주년을 맞이하여 다녀온 순례길에 섬티아고가 있었습니다. 전라남도 신안군의 소악도에 문준경 전도사를 기리며 만들어 놓은 12개의 기념 건물을 돌아보는 길로, 12사도의 순례길이라 부르기도 합니다. 세계적으로 유명한 예술가들이 12사도의 이름으로 하나씩 만들어 약 4-5마일 길에 띄엄띄엄 세워놓았습니다.

문준경 전도사님의 이름이 생소한 분도 있겠지만, 증도라는 섬에서는 전설적인 인물입니다. 문준경 전도사님의 전도로 증도는 거의 99%의 주민이 교회를 다니는 섬이 되었습니다. 약 2000명의 주민이 사는데, 교회가 11개나 있습니다. 이 작은 섬에서 문준경 전도사님의 전도를 받아 한국 기독교에 위대한 인물이 된 대표적인 인물들로는 한국 CCC 창시자 김준곤 목사님과 성결교단의 총회장을 역임한 이만신 목사님이 계십니다. 

참으로 기구한 인생을 살았던 문준경 전도사님은 이미 다른 여자가 있는 남편에게 시집을 오면서 극심한 좌절을 느낍니다. 그러나, 시부모님의 사랑을 받으며 한글을 깨우치고, 서른 넘어 신학을 공부하여 교회를 개척하기에 이릅니다. 

1950년 한국전쟁이 발발하며, 공산주의자들의 박해가 심해진 상황에서 결국 끌려 가다가 서울이 수복되었지만, 증도의 성도들은 계속 아직 달아나지 못한 공산당에 의해 곤욕을 치르는데 문준경 전도사는 섬마을 성도들을 살리기 위해 증도로 돌아와 자기를 죽이고, 성도들을 놓아달라 애걸하여 문준경 전도사만 순교당하고, 모든 성도들은 풀려 났다고 합니다. 

한국 교회의 빛나는 본보기가 된 문준경 전도사님의 생애를 기리며, 만든 것이 섬티아고 순례길입니다. 여론은 특정 종교에 편향된 이런 순례길을 만든 것을 반대하여, 12사도의 이름이 아닌 다른 이름으로 바꿨다가, 다시 증도 기독교인들이 헌금하여, 사도들의 이름을 회복시켰다고 합니다.

140년의 한국 기독교 역사 속에 이곳저곳에 남아 있는 기념관들, 박물관들, 그리고 순례의 길들을 돌아보면서, 한국을 특별히 사랑해 주신 하나님의 섭리를 부인할 수가 없습니다. 아직 많은 것들을 보존하지 못하고 역사의 뒤안길에 잃어 버린 것들이 많은 아쉬움이 있지만, 그래도 소중히 간직된 유물들을 통해 신앙을 전수해 주신 선교사님들과 믿음의 부모님들에게 한없는 감사가 나옵니다. 

여행 가이드께서 하시는 말씀이 요즘은 3대 가족이 신앙전수를 목적으로 이런 투어를 일부러 하는 추세라고 합니다. 우리 교회도 곧 반세기를 맞이하면서, 이런 기념비적인 은혜의 역사가 대를 이어 3대가 함께 디아스포라 교회의 신앙을 지켜가는 기념비적인 해가 되기를 기도합니다.

Sumtiago

There is a beautiful island of Santiago in Greece. Blue roof on white buildings is quite impressive. There was Sumtiago on our pilgrimage trip this year, marking the 140th anniversary of missions in Korea. There are 12 memorial buildings in memory of Evangelist Joonkyung Moon in South Jolla province. The route leading to these memorial buildings is sometimes called Pilgrimage of 12 Disciples. World renown artists designed them, each with a disciple’s name. They are built every 4-5 miles from each other.

Some of you may not be familiar with Evangelist Joonkyung Moon. She is legendary on the island of Jeung-do. Through Joonkyung Moon’s evangelism, 99% of people living on Jeung-do island attend church. The population is only about 2000, but there are 11 churches. Two of the people who converted through Joonkyung Moon’s evangelism are Rev. Joon-gon Kim, the founder of CCC, and Rev. Man-sin Lee who served as the president of general assembly of the Christian Holiness Church. 

Evangelist Joonkyung Moon, who lived a miserable life, married her husband who already had another woman. She was extremely frustrated. However, she was loved by her parents in-law and learned to read Korean. She went to seminary well into her thirties, and began to plant churches. 

Korean war broke out in 1950. Persecution of communists intensified, but in the end, Seoul was recaptured. However, believers in Jeung-do suffered humiliation at the hands of the communists who had yet to flee. Evangelist Joonkyung returned to Jeung-do to save the believers by pleading with the communists to set the people of island free and take her instead. All believers were released and only Evangelist Joongkyung Moon was martyred. 

Remembering the life of Evangelist Joongkyung Moon, who became a shining example in Korean church, this pilgrimage route called Sumtiago was made. Because public opinion was against the creation of such a pilgrimage route that is biased toward a particular religion, the name of the route changed from the original 12 disciples’ names. However, Jeung-do Christians donated offerings, and restored the disciple names.

Looking back on the memorials, museums, and pilgrimage route that are the history of Korean Christianity, there is no denying God’s providence that has especially loved Korea. Many things were not preserved. It is a shame that many things were lost in the back alley of history. However, through preserved relics, I am forever grateful to the missionaries who passed on their faith and our faithful parents. 

Our tour guide said, with the goal of passing on the faith for 3 generations, it is a trend to take these kinds of trips. Our church will be a half century old. I pray that this monumental history of grace will continue through generations, and that this will be a momentous year, with 3 generations coming together, to keep the faith of diaspora church.
