지난 주일도 설교를 준비하면서 눈물을 닦느라 지체되었는데, 설교를 하면서도 주책없이 눈물이 자꾸 나오려고 해서 몇 번 울컥 하고 말았습니다. 지금도 십자가 말씀을 전할 때마다 가슴이 먹먹해지는 현상은 어쩔 수 없습니다. 다시 한번 ‘날 구원하신 주 감사~’ 이 찬송을 하며 하루를 시작할 수밖에 없습니다. 예배 후 교회 마당을 돌아다니며 이분 저분 만나 인사를 나누다가, 눈물이 전염된 한 성도님을 만나, 카페 앞에서 수많은 성도들이 지나다니는 눈앞에서 말씀에 눈물샘이 터졌다고 흐느끼며 다시 그 감동을 두 남자가 눈물을 흘리며 은혜를 나누었습니다. 그날따라 손수건도 없고, 그 흔한 휴지 조각도 없어서 맨손으로 눈물을 닦아내는 수밖에 없었습니다. 어떤 분은 “뭘 그런 것 가지고 우냐” 하며 이상해할 수 있는데, 그때 눈물 흘린 어색한 두 남자 마음에는 천국의 행복과 소망이 움트고 있었습니다.

이같이 눈물은 심령 깊은 곳에 있는 마음의 원액을 끌어 올립니다. 물 없이 우리 몸이 못 살듯이, 우리의 영혼은 눈물이 없으면 말라 갑니다. 눈물은 꽁꽁 언 영혼에 훈훈한 봄을 가져오며, 눈물은 사망의 밭에서 사랑의 움을 돋게 합니다. 그래서 눈물은 생명의 양분이며, 기적의 액체입니다.

지난 수요일 큐티 본문 시편 56:8에서 시인은 “나의 유리함을 주께서 계수하셨사오니 나의 눈물을 주의 병에 담으소서…” 기도하고 있습니다. 나의 아픔의 날들을 계수하시는 하나님께서 나의 눈물을 주님의 병에 담아 놓고, 계수 즉 그 양을 재고 있다고 하십니다. 물론 시적인 표현이지만, 실제 하나님은 우리의 눈물을 결코 잊지 않고 기억하신다는 말씀입니다. 아픔의 눈물, 기쁨의 눈물, 감격의 눈물… 은혜의 눈물을 기억하고 계신다고 하십니다. 눈금이 그려져 있는 병에 우리의 눈물을 담아 계수하고 계신다는 것입니다. 저는 기적의 액체를 갖고 있는 사람들에게 친근감을 느낍니다. 그 사람의 눈물 속에 영혼의 빛깔을 볼 수 있기 때문이다. 그 눈물이 떨어지는 곳에 복음이 심기고, 생명이 발아 합니다. 눈물의 영롱함은 공포의 풍랑을 몰아내고, 소망의 무지개를 뜨게 합니다. 우리 눈물로 봉사하십시다. 눈물로 예배를 드리십시다. 눈물로 인사 나눕시다. 눈물의 기도를 드립시다. 기적이 일어날 것입니다. 하나님이 오늘 찾는 일군은 단연코 이 기적의 액체를 가진 사람일 것입니다.

Miracle Liquid, Tearful People

As I was preparing for Lord’s Day sermon last week, I kept having to wipe off tears, causing delays. Even as I was delivering the message, I had to refrain from bursting into tears a few times. Even now, whenever I deliver messages of the cross, I can’t help but to feel aching of heart. Once more, I had to begin a day with the praise song ‘I thank God for saving me~’. After worship, as I was walking around visiting people in the courtyard, I met a congregation who had similar contagious tears. In front of café with many onlookers, we were two guys with tears bursting and sobbing in emotion while sharing His grace. It happens that I did not have a handkerchief or tissue that day. I could only wipe tears with my bare hands. Some may think it’s strange that we were “crying over that sort of thing.” But on that day, the hearts of these two awkward guys were sprouting with joy and hope of heavenly kingdom.

Like this experience, tears draw out the original essence of heart from deep within the soul. Just like we cannot live without water, our spirits dry up without tears. Tears bring the warmth of spring season to hearts that are frozen solid. Tears bring sprouts to grow in deadened ground. That is why tears are nutrition to life, a miracle liquid.

In last week’s QT passage Psalm 56:8, the author prays, “You have kept count of my tossings, put my tears in your bottle…” God counts our days of pain, puts my tears in His bottle and measures. Of course, this is a poetry expression, but what it means is that he will not forget our tears and will remember. He remembers our tears of pain, tears of joy, tears of emotion… tears of grace. He counts our tears by putting them in a measurement marked bottle. I feel close to people with tears of miracle. That’s because you can see the color of their spirits in their tears. When those tears drop, gospel is planted, and life is formed. The beauty of tears drives away the storm of fear. It creates a rainbow of hope. Let’s serve with our tears. Let’s worship with tears. Let’s greet with tears. Let’s pray with tears. There will be miracles. Workers that God is searching for today are people with this miracle liquid.
